Culturing hiPSC and Other Cell Lines in Same Lab Space

Hello!

Our lab has a single small space for culturing cells. We have been using the Allen ihPSC cells and are looking into bringing in another cell line, 3T3. I know that HeLa cells have issues with ‘jumping’ between cultures and contaminating different cell lines grown within the same space.

Does anyone know if the ihPSC cells or the 3T3 cells have similar problems? Are there any other cell lines besides HeLa that I should be concerned about?

Thank you!

Hello, I would suggest you run an STR profile on your cell cultures if you plan to culture two different cell types in your lab. You can do this shortly after acquiring the new cells in your lab, after you freeze cells, after cells have been in culture for a long period (about 10 passages), or when in doubt. It would also be good standard practice to test them routinely (not sure how often that would be and would depend on your lab). I do agree that HeLa are the most worrisome with cross contamination. I personally have not worked with 3T3 cells to know if there is risk but also a good idea to check to make sure your cells did NOT mix over time when working with different cell types. Let us know if you have anymore questions.
